How to print QR code and barcode labels on Avery sheets

Print a whole batch of codes straight onto sticker sheets, lined up with the labels, without Word templates or mail merge.

Step by step

  1. Make your codes in the generator: one code, a batch from a CSV file or a numbered series.
  2. In the options, open Printing and choose your label sheet. The product number is printed on the sheet’s packaging (for example “L7160” or “5160”).
  3. Set Copies of each code if you need several labels per code, and Start at label no. for a part-used sheet.
  4. Click Print (or Print / save as PDF in batch mode).
  5. In the print dialog choose: scale 100% / Actual size (never “Fit to page”), the right paper size (A4 or Letter), margins None or default, and headers and footers off.
  6. Print a test page on plain paper, put it on top of a label sheet and hold both against a window. If the codes sit inside the labels, print on the real sheets.

On wide labels, the code sits next to the text

On wide labels such as L7160 or 5160, QR codes with a description are printed with the code on the left at full label height and the description on the right, so both stay readable. Barcodes stay stacked, because they are already wide.

Fixing alignment

Two label sheets: on the first the printed codes are all shifted by the same amount, on the second the shift grows towards the bottom of the page.Even shiftFix: Move right / Move downShift grows down the pageFix: print at 100%
Hold a plain-paper test print against a label sheet. An even shift is corrected with the Move right / Move down setting; a shift that grows means the print was scaled.
  • Everything is shifted the same amount (for example 1.5 mm down): enter the correction in Move right / Move down in the Printing options (negative numbers move left and up), and print the test page again.
  • The shift grows towards the bottom of the page: the print is being scaled. Check that the scale is 100% and the paper size matches the sheet.
  • Codes are cut off at the edges: some printers can’t print close to the edge. Use a sheet with wider margins, or choose a larger label size.
  • Sheets jam or skew: feed them through the manual feed tray one at a time and set the paper type to “Labels” in the printer settings.

Which sheet for which job?

  • Address size (L7160/5160, about 64 × 38 mm / 2⅝ × 1 in): QR codes with a short description, asset tags, product labels.
  • Small (L7651, 38 × 21 mm; 5167): barcodes and short codes only. Keep the content short.
  • Large (L7165, L7173, 5163, 5164): signs, box labels and codes that are scanned from further away.

Not sure how big the codes need to be? See the QR code size guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which label sheets are supported?

Avery A4: L7160, L7159, L7163, L7162, L7173, L7165, L7651 (and the J-series inkjet versions with the same numbers). US Letter: 5160, 5163, 5164, 5167 (and 8160 etc.). Other brands with the same label size and layout work too.

Why are my labels slightly off?

Usually because the print was scaled (“Fit to page”) or the printer feeds the paper a little off. Choose 100% / “Actual size”. For a small even shift, use “Move right” and “Move down” in the Printing options; negative values move left and up.

Can I print on a sheet that is already partly used?

Yes. Set “Start at label no.” to the first free label. Labels are numbered left to right, top to bottom.

Inkjet or laser?

Use labels made for your printer type (Avery L-series for laser, J-series for inkjet). Laser prints are more durable and smudge-free, which is better for barcodes that will be handled.
