When to use Code 128

  • Shipping and logistics: parcel and pallet labels, order numbers.
  • Inventory and warehouses: SKU and shelf location labels.
  • Asset tags and serial numbers: see the asset tag generator for numbered series.
  • Libraries, documents and tickets: any internal ID that mixes letters and digits.

Tips for barcodes that scan

  • Use bar width 2 or more for printing, and keep the white space on both sides of the code.
  • Dark bars on a white background scan best. Avoid red bars: many scanners use red light and can't see them.
  • For lots of labels, use Batch from CSV and print directly onto Avery label sheets.

Frequently asked questions

What can Code 128 encode?

All standard ASCII characters: upper and lower case letters, digits, spaces and punctuation. Long runs of digits are packed extra compactly.

Code 128 or Code 39?

Use Code 128 unless an existing system requires Code 39. Code 128 makes shorter barcodes for the same content and supports lower case letters.

Can I use letters like ä, ö or õ?

No. Code 128 only supports basic ASCII characters. Use a QR code for text with accented letters.

How long can the content be?

There is no fixed limit, but every character makes the barcode wider. Keep it under about 20 characters for labels that scan easily.
