What the check digit is for

The last digit of every EAN and UPC barcode is calculated from the others. When a scanner or a person reads a number with one wrong digit, or with two neighbouring digits swapped, the check digit no longer matches and the error is caught.

Typical uses

  • Completing new product numbers: you have the 12 digits from your GS1 range and need the 13th.
  • Cleaning up a product list: paste a column from Excel and find the numbers with typos.
  • Before printing barcodes: check the numbers first, then make the barcodes with the EAN-13, UPC or bulk generator (which also adds check digits automatically).

Frequently asked questions

How is the check digit calculated?

Starting from the right of the number (without the check digit), multiply the digits alternately by 3 and 1 and add them up. The check digit is the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10. For example, if the sum is 67, the check digit is 3.

Which numbers does it handle?

EAN-8 (7 + 1 digits), UPC-A (11 + 1), EAN-13 (12 + 1) and GTIN-14 / ITF-14 (13 + 1). They all use the same GS1 check digit rule.

Does a correct check digit mean the number is registered?

No. The check digit only catches typing and scanning errors. Whether a number belongs to a company is recorded by GS1; see how to get a barcode for your product.
